Boy what a whirlwind to stand next to this past month with all the church activities! I’m looking forward to a spot of quiet time to reflect and rest up. I remember in the Gospels where the disciples had a whirlwind day of ministries and wanted to keep going and Jesus said “it is enough.” In any effort there’s always a surge of energy that wants to gather everything in its path and whirl it around. Sometimes we have to step aside and say to ourselves “it is enough.”
All of life requires a balance. Rest is part of it. If we aren’t rested and renewed, we can’t give our best efforts. As I’ve said in previous articles, the Gospels are full of stories of Jesus going away to a quiet place to pray. Are we programming in lots of quiet time for rest and reflection this summer?
Rest and reflection can actually mean doing nothing. As some of you recall I attended a workshop a while ago called the art of doing nothing. As a culture we try to program so carefully every phase of our life that even our R&R time has been programmed and sometimes over programmed. Can we be still and know that thou art God? (Ps. 46:10) Remember the prophet that met the Lord not in the whirlwind, but in the “still small voice crying in the wilderness.” (I Kings 19:12)
Peace,
Fr. Gary
